The Sonardyne Origin 600 is an all-in-one Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler that integrates current profiling, surface wave measurement, onboard edge processing, and acoustic telemetry in a single deployable unit. Unlike conventional ADCPs, it supports programmable multi-schedule sampling, 1 TB of onboard high-fidelity storage, and an integrated acoustic modem for remote data access, addressing longstanding trade-offs between sampling frequency, battery life, and data retrieval.
In this evaluation, Synchro and partners deployed the Origin 600 at the head of Monterey Submarine Canyon to characterize ocean currents and surface waves in a dynamic coastal environment. The results demonstrate the instrument’s ability to capture both tidally driven internal wave activity and surface wave conditions simultaneously, with applications ranging from coastal resilience and sediment transport to understanding nearshore nutrient dynamics and offshore energy infrastructure.
