Directed Access Monterey Bay, California
Below is a list and description of our direct access facilities in Monterey Bay, CA.
MBARI Test Mooring
Still in development.
The Dauphin is a 22-foot (Radon style) outboard with a large aft deck and detachable 200 pound davit. The vessel is trailered to Monterey harbor for launch and keeps within a 10-15 mile range. On a good day it can make it around to Carmel Bay. HMS staff must captain this vessel.
RV Blue Serengeti
The Blue Serengeti is a 23-foot (Grady White style) outboard with an open aft deck and bow pulpit. The vessel is trailered to Monterey harbor for launch and keeps within a 10-15 mile range. On a good day it can make it around to Carmel Bay. HMS staff must captain this vessel.
The Paragon is a 36-foot outboard with a large aft deck supported by a 500 pound deck boom. The vessel is docked within Moss Landing Harbor and generally explores a range within 20 miles of the harbor.
MBARI Test Tank
The indoor seawater test tank is 40ft deep and approximately 9 meters by 13 meters in size. The tank is supplied with filtered seawater. The tank is in close proximity to shore power and WiFi. The tank is supported by a gantry with a 8 ton lift capacity and accessed through a wide bay door.
High Pressure Chamber
MBARI operates a high pressure chamber capable of achieving up to 10,000 psi (~7000m depth seawater). Nominally, the chamber can fit objects up to 9 inches wide and 30 inches long.
MBARI and CeNCOOS operate several spray gliders along the California coast. These workhorse systems are often operating long durations. Advanced notice and planning would be required to evaluate hardware on these platforms.
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
MBARI operates several classes of AUVs from Moss Landing Harbor. These platforms are generally booked out a year in advance and would require careful planning to incorporate technology from outside organizations.
MBARI operates wave gliders from Moss Landing Harbor which are able to remain at sea for weeks to months with a scientific equipment payload. Advanced notice and planning would be required to evaluate hardware on these platforms.
