Seatrec - Energy harvesting for ocean drones

 

 

Seatrec’s Persistent Smart Acoustic Profiler (PSAP), developed in partnership with the Naval Postgraduate School, is a first-of-its-kind platform that pairs a passive acoustic hydrophone with Seatrec’s energy harvesting profiling float technology, a groundbreaking advance in persistent underwater acoustic monitoring. The infiniTE™ system generates electricity from naturally occurring temperature differences in ocean waters, giving PSAP a sustained net-positive energy balance that eliminates the need for ship-based retrieval, battery replacement, or data offload required by conventional moored hydrophones and battery-powered floats. During an eight-month test deployment off Hawaii, PSAP completed more than 1,000 dives to 700 meters depth while maintaining this energy balance and transmitting oceanographic and passive acoustic data products to shore in near real-time via satellite. This persistent, low-life-cycle-cost monitoring capability supports applications including marine mammal monitoring, National Marine Sanctuary management, environmental assessment around offshore energy development, and detection of illegal activity in protected marine areas.
